Emilie Bausager

Name: Emilie Bausager

Occupation: Artist and garden designer

What jewellery did you wear in the portrait? Gold chunky chain necklace from my boyfriend, a Tiffany thin gold chain with a diamond from my parents (had it since I was 16 and never take it off) and gold plate earrings I bought at a market.

What is your own favourite piece of jewellery, and why? I don't wear it very often but my mum gave me the first ring my dad ever bought her and I think it's the most important piece of jewellery to me. As they live in the UK it's nice to have that piece of them with me. It's a gold chunky ring with a blue sapphire in the middle and a diamond on each side.

Can you describe a cherished memory connected to jewellery? My grandma gave me a vintage Georg Jensen watch a few years ago. It was the item she bought with her first pay check when she got her first proper job. I thought that was a pretty cool symbol to pass on.

What does jewellery mean to you? Jewellery is definitely a form of expression for me. It becomes part of your personality and for the pieces I wear most often I tend to gravitate to jewellery that has been given to me by someone meaningful in my life. A way of having them close. I've had pieces given to me from family members from special moments in their life. The longevity and history of jewellery is interesting to me.

How do you use jewellery – do you have a daily uniform, do you wear special pieces for parties, is it embellishment, a second skin, or? I have a fixed set that I wear everyday (the pieces I wore for the shoot) that I never take off.  If I have to take things off all the time, I would just loose everything so I go for pieces that can't fall off. Necklaces can't be too large in case I have an impromptu swim. For social occasions or parties I like to experiment with more over the top costume jewellery. My style tends to have a slightly comedic aspect to it so anything oversized and sparkly is great. I used to wear a huge blue plastic Elvis style cocktail ring when I went out quite a lot.
