Emma Stern Nielsen

Name: Emma Stern Nielsen

Occupation: Architecture student and model

What jewellery did you wear in the portrait? Pearl earring and diamond earring from Sophie Bille Brahe, small pinky ring from Catbird Nyc, ring with pearls from Pacharavipa, silver ring from Georg Jensen, and the pinky gold ring with a stone and the other gold ring, I made myself.

What is your own favourite piece of jewellery, and why? If I have to pick one favourite, it would be the rings that I made myself. It feels good to have something that no one else has and I just appreciate it more knowing I put a lot of hours into it instead of just buying it in a store.

Can you describe a cherished memory connected to jewellery? I don’t think I have a specific moment, but jewellery is always a special gift. I have a few pieces that I inherited, it's nothing fancy and I almost never wear them, but they mean a lot to me.

What does jewellery mean to you? I wear the same jewellery everyday, somedays only a few of them, but always the same. I like having kind of a uniform, maybe because it's easy, but also because it's all pieces I collected over many years. I don’t like having a lot of random pieces, but rather carefully select a few that goes with everything.

How do you use jewellery – do you have a daily uniform, do you wear special pieces for parties, is it embellishment, a second skin, or? All my clothing is quite basic, so fine jewellery is a nice way to give the look a little extra. I try to dress up for parties with big earrings but I always end up with the smaller ones...
