Stacking necklaces

Stacking necklaces

Stacking pieces of jewellery is a fun way to show your personality. From stacking rings to layering necklaces, there are plenty of options for you to wear multiple pieces at once.

Siobhan O’Neill, the jewellery designer behind Sweet Pea, tells us she’s “always loved to lash it on, the whole nine yards.

“In the 90s, it became quite the thing to have all the chains and everything. But I've sort of done it in a very demure, delicate way.”

Layering necklaces or creating the perfect neckline stack shouldn’t be something you overthink.

Siobhan explains: “I usually tell customers to just put on their most common neckline, something they wear every day, and then measure with a measuring tape or piece of string or ribbon. This is a great way to get the length right.”

Once you know the maximum length of your neck stack, all you have to do is pick your favourite pieces and layer them on.

And don’t worry if you have necklaces that don’t fit perfectly with your ideal necklace stack, you can get necklaces resized fairly easily.

Adjusting the length of necklaces is a service we offer at Finematter. It’s fast and easy, so you can transform your favourite necklaces into the perfect pieces for your stack.

Whether you decide to go for similar pieces at different lengths or a mix of all your favourite necklaces, regardless of style, depends on your personal style.

Siobhan says: “I think it's a matter of your personality. For some people, one tiny little piece here is almost overdone. And then for other people, putting 10 necklaces on is the go-to.”

There are no right or wrong ways to layer necklaces – or to stack rings -, as long as it fits in with your style and lifestyle.

“I think the trend came from the USA. In LA people have wealth and they like to show it, but they wear T-shirts and jeans the whole time. You see a lot of jewellery layering up in America.

“They want to show their personality but it's hard with a white T-shirt and jeans. So that's where they put their look together: on their neck. Which is great because I love it all, it looks great.”

To show off even more of your unique style, why not stack personalised necklaces? You can mix your birthstone with your initial or that of someone close to you.

But you don’t have to stick to your neckline if you’re a fan of stacking jewellery.

Ring stacking is another obvious option. But you can also stack jewellery on your wrist, or on your ears.

A curated ear is a great way to show personality and not have to worry too much about practicality – unless you pick long, dangling earrings or oversized hoops.

You can express yourself by mixing and matching earrings in a combination unique to you, from minimalist styles to statement pieces.

Cuffs mean you don’t even need to have your ears pierced to join in on the fun.
