How to care for your diamond jewellery
Diamonds are everyone’s best friend. The fire and sparkle emitted by a well cut diamond is matched by no other gemstone making diamond jewellery a must have for jewellery lovers. Caring for diamond jewellery doesn’t need to be daunting. As the hardest natural material on earth, diamonds are pretty resilient to chemicals, heat and stress. That said, you should still take care whilst cleaning your diamond jewellery.
The first and most crucial step is to check your diamond pieces thoroughly for loose stones. You can do this by gently prodding any diamond set in your jewellery item - you can do this with your finger or a toothpick. Loose stones can become dislodged from their setting during the cleaning process so if you do notice any loose stones, it may be best to take your item for a professional clean and repair to ensure that you don't lose any precious diamonds.
Regular maintenance
Once you are confident that all of your diamonds are secure, fill a bowl with warm water and a mild detergent and soak your diamond jewellery for up to 30 minutes. Soaking your jewellery will loosen up any dirt or grime lodged between your diamonds and their setting. Once soaked, give your pieces a rinse and check your progress.
Next you will need to get into all of the hard to reach nooks and crannies. Using a soft toothbrush, gently scrub the required areas, regularly rinsing to check your progress. Sometimes dirt can be hard to remove, especially if your item hasn’t been cleaned in a while, so feel free to repeat this process until you are satisfied.
Once you are happy with the cleanliness of your jewellery, give it a final rinse with warm water and gently dry with a microfibre cloth. Try to avoid using cotton wool or towels as the fibres can get caught by the claws used to set your diamonds in place. For diamonds set in silver, you can follow this step with a silver polishing cloth to add an extra shine to the setting.
