Heidi Hockenjos built her craft over fifteen years as a designer and maker in Hatton Garden, working with brands such as Sia Taylor and Polly Wales, before setting up her own studio in Stroud. Her first collection was picked for Shine, the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s showcase of new talent. She cuts many of her own stones, shaping softer ones like turquoise, lapis, labradorite and moonstone into small, rounded forms. She then sets them next to sharply faceted rubies, sapphires and diamonds, and treats both kinds of stone as equals. The gold is softly textured, and she keeps the fittings as small as she can so the stones and colours do the work. She takes a lot from ancient jewellery, and the finished pieces look a little like artefacts, as if they could come from almost any period.
