Plating process
What types of metals can be plated?
Our goldsmith can add a fresh layer of yellow, rose or white gold to any sterling silver or solid gold jewellery. We can't plate any pieces made of brass, bronze or mixed metals.
I don’t know what my jewellery is made of, how can I find out?
Most precious gold and silver jewellery will have a stamp or hallmark. These stamps can help you identify what your jewellery is made of. You can read our guide here.
My jewellery is made of a non-precious metal. Can it be plated?
We may be able to plate some non-precious metals so please get in touch with us prior to booking. If you do send us costume jewellery (any jewellery made of metals other than sterling silver or solid gold), we will attempt to complete the plating process, but we are unable to guarantee results, durability or longevity of the plating.
Do you plate watches?
We do not plate watches. Our workshop specialises in plating jewellery only.
My jewellery contains stones. Can I still have this plated?
Most stones can be plated, such as diamonds and emeralds. However, there’s some gemstones which may become damaged or discoloured through the plating process. These stones include; opals, lapis, malachite, moonstones, labradorite and coral.
Can I plate silver jewellery?
We can plate any jewellery, regardless of whether it has previously been plated with gold or not.
How is the jewellery plated?
Our goldsmith uses a gold plating process called electroplating. Electroplating is a process that involves depositing a thin layer of metal onto the surface of an object using electrolysis. During the process, the jewellery is submerged in a gold solution, forming a layer of fresh gold on the surface of the piece.
