Jewellery gifts for yourself and others

Jewellery gifts for yourself and others

It’s gifting season and if you’re looking for the perfect gift this Christmas, jewellery could be the answer.

Real jewellery is a gift that lasts a lifetime and is full of meaning. Giving – and receiving – jewellery is an intimate act that speaks volume about your relationship with your loved ones.

We spoke to jewellery designer Jennie Kwon about her gifting habits and the holidays, all in time for Christmas.

When it comes to gifting jewellery for the holidays, everything depends on the recipient and your relationship to them.

Jennie explains: “It really depends on who the gifter is and who the giftee is. Obviously, we have husbands gifting wives, and if that's the case, they're willing to be more extravagant. They aren't afraid to venture into bigger pieces.

“Bigger is relative, because in our brand, everything is very small. So it would be the pieces, like diamond pieces.

“We have a lot of people buying diamond bands for their partners during this time.

“I really love our new Chubby Half Round Pave Band. It’s seemingly straightforward in design, but it has a certain weight to it that just feels nice.”

Jewellery is a meaningful gift that can be kept forever and passed down generations.

“A thing I love about what I do is that no matter how small the piece, it holds so much meaning for people. It's very different from clothing, for instance. Clothing can have a sentimental value to someone, but more often than not, it’s a statement.

“Jewellery so often holds a very deep meaning for people.

There's a certain feeling of permanence with jewellery, because of the materials. If jewellery is taken care of, you can hand it down generations to come.

“A lot of times these pieces start off telling a story. We’ll have a couple asking to swap a gemstone to an aquamarine, for example, because that’s their child’s birthstone.

“You can potentially wear the same jewellery every day. You don’t want to wear the same pair of jeans every single day. But jewellery can almost become a second skin.”

While Jennie is quick to reiterate that gifting jewellery is a very personal gesture and that it all depends on the recipient, she also shared some of her favourite pieces to gift.

“For someone who loves earrings and has a tonne of piercings, I love to gift a little medley of studs.

“Our white equilibrium stud is really cute, and our dot studs are very dainty, but they pop because they're vibrant in colour.

“Earrings are great because if you know the person has piercings, you don’t have to worry about sizes.

“In the same vein, I think necklaces are obviously an easy gift because you don't have to worry about the sizing. Our oval wisp necklaces are very classic and vibrant. They have our signature milgrain detail and you can layer them with different styles. They just blend in really well with other pieces.

“And of course, you can never go wrong with a diamond necklace.”

While gifting others is part of the fun of Christmas, it’s also perfectly acceptable to get something for yourself.

“We have self-gifters too. I love the fact that our customers like to purchase for themselves and don’t necessarily wait around for someone to buy jewellery for them.

We've had many people share their stories with us, which is very touching.

“People just want to celebrate themselves, and one person reached out to us to tell us to say they were buying a piece to celebrate a new chapter in their life.”
