How to care for your solid gold jewellery

Our tips and tricks on how best to take care of your gold jewellery

For those who love gold jewellery, be that white yellow or rose, preserving the sparkle and shine of your piece will allow you to make the most of your jewellery box. From time to time gold jewellery can become dull or dirty, especially if like us at Finematter you are wearing your gold jewellery items everyday. Luckily gold jewellery is easily cleaned and maintained.

How to make your gold jewellery sparkle again

The easiest and best way to clean your solid gold jewellery at home is to use a mild detergent such as washing up liquid, warm water and a soft toothbrush. For best results, soak your gold in warm soapy water for 30 minutes before rinsing and gently drying with a soft microfibre cloth.

For pieces that feature engravings, textures or small hard to reach areas you can use a soft toothbrush. Gently scrub the required areas, regularly rinsing to check your progress. Sometimes dirt can be hard to remove, especially if your item hasn’t been cleaned in a while, so feel free to repeat this process until you are satisfied.

For gold jewellery set with gemstones and diamonds be sure to check whether your gemstones are able to withstand the cleaning process. To do so, carefully examine your gold jewellery for loose stones or any chips or fractures. If you need to use a soft toothbrush, be sure to go easy around the areas set with gemstones or diamonds to prevent any loose stones from falling out. It is also important to consider the type of gemstones set in your jewellery as not all gemstones are cleaned in the same way.
